Japanese grant to strengthen JAF border management

AMMAN — The government of Japan provided a $754,953 grant to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to strengthen Jordan’s border management at its northeast border.

IOM will implement a project to support the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) in establishing and improving their capacity to provide emergency urgent trauma care at the North-East border area, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The Japan-funded project will include the construction of field medical facilities at the north-east border and capacity-building training for JAF and Royal Medical Services (RMS) personnel in urgent trauma care and Health, Border and Mobility Management (HBMM) framework.

"Due to the instability of Jordan’s neighbours, the Government of Japan recognises the urgent need for JAF to increase their capacity to offer urgent trauma care along the north-eastern border," said Japanese Ambassador Jiro Okuyama. 

The new collaboration with IOM will address these critical needs, enabling JAF to provide effective and life-saving care for its members and Syrian refugees, the ambassador said.

IOM's Chief of Mission in Jordan, Tajma Kurt, said that supporting JAF’s medical capacities to provide emergency healthcare along the northeastern border region has “become an urgent need now more than ever”.
