Inspection campaigns aim to organise domestic labour market — minister

AMMAN — The purpose of intensifying labour inspection campaigns is to regulate the job market and make it more attractive to the youth, thus more competitive for businesses, Labour Minister Nidal Bataineh said on Tuesday.

From Monday night, through dawn on Tuesday, inspection teams apprehended 168 violating guest workers of various nationalities, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Effective monitoring to guarantee proper enforcement and implementation of the law is the best tool to address foreign labour violations, the minister said.

“It helps limit the numbers of violating guest workers,” Bataineh added.

Bataineh’s remarks came as he met with members of the joint inspection teams who carried out an unannounced campaign on Monday night, according to Petra.

The ministry does not allow breaking the law, the minister said, nor does it allow insulting guest workers in the process of enforcing the law, Petra reported.

Campaigns follow strict legal and humanitarian procedures, reflecting the level, competency and integrity of the inspectors, Bataineh said, calling on all monitors to deal professionally with business owners and workers.

Bataineh also urged commitment to the law and regulations, mainly Article 12 of the Labour Law, banning the recruitment of non-Jordanian workers without the proper work permit from the ministry.
