'Indonesian billionaire pledges $1m to Jordan to help with refugee crisis'

AMMAN — Indonesian billionaire entrepreneur Dato Sri Prof. Dr Tahir has pledged $1 million to Jordan to help with the burden of hosting refugees, during a visit to the Kingdom last week, the Indonesian embassy in Amman said.

Indonesia's Ambassador to Jordan Teguh Wardoyo accompanied an Indonesian delegation including Tahir, business leaders and journalists to visit refugee camps in Jordan on Wednesday and Thursday.

The group visited UNHCR's office in Amman as well as camps in the capital, Zarqa and Azraq to witness firsthand the medical assistance, education, housing and other services provided to refugees, the embassy said in a statement.

As well as the pledge to the Jordanian government, Tahir also donated $1 million to UNHCR.

Tahir, whose wealth is estimated at $2.4 billion, was received by Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Jawad Anani and commended Jordan's role in tackling the Syrian refugee crisis.
