Import value of local apparel sector stands at JD82m, says industry representative

AMMAN — The import value of the local apparel sector reached JD82 million, said President of the Textile, Readymade Clothes and Footwear Syndicate Sultan Allan.

In an interview with The Jordan Times, Allan said: “The bulk of the imports come from China, Turkey and Bangladesh.”

Most apparel shops and stores have their winter collections, and are offering discounts on summer clothing, he said.

Allan reiterated the need to consider controls on postal parcels entering the Kingdom which continue to impact traders and sector operators. 

“The shifting business environment is a challenge to all of us and by having clear policies some of the pressure faced by traders would be lessened,” he added.

During the first nine months of 2023, around 693,000 postal parcels have entered Jordan, he said.

Tahseen Taha, an employee at a women apparel store, told The Jordan Times on Wednesday that “demand is still low maybe because families are still busy with the new school year and the other reason is that people start buying winter clothes in late September or early October”. 

Current sales are around 20 per cent lower than the previous month, Taha said.
