‘Human rights report to be presented in Geneva review next year’

AMMAN — Representatives of the civil society, the government and the government’s human rights coordination team concluded on Tuesday a consultative meeting reviewing the human rights situation in Jordan, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The participants discussed measures to implement recommendations concerning the human rights status in Jordan.

A report on the situation of human rights in Jordan is scheduled to be presented in Geneva in 2018 during the Universal Periodical Review (UPR).

UPR is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States, according to United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner website.

Following the meeting, a statement was issued, highlighting the efforts exerted in previous years to boost human rights and to design a national human rights plan, Petra reported.

The economic challenges facing Jordan have been hindering the progress of human rights, especially in the economic, social and cultural domains, the participants said.

They highlighted the additional burden and challenges created by the influx of refugees, and indicated the need for increased efforts to safeguard human rights in such conditions.

The attendees agreed to form an expanded coalition for civil society institutions to complete a periodic comprehensive review of human rights in 2018.
