AMMAN — Work will begin to construct 60 dams and ditches this year as part of rainwater harvesting projects, Agriculture Minister Khalid Hneifat said on Saturday.
The minister’s remarks came during his visit to the Central Badia region. The ministry dug 63 ditches and more than 5,000 wells last year and is expected to dig another 5,000 wells this year, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Hneifat added that the capacity of water harvesting projects implemented by the government has reached 50 million cubic metres, while it stood at three million cubic metres last year. He stressed that in implementation of Royal directives to develop the agricultural sector, water harvesting sites are being monitored to ensure the sustainability of water resources and to rehabilitate dams and ditches.
