GPD pays debt of JD102m to pharmaceutical companies

AMMAN — The Government Procurement Department (GPD) settled part of the unpaid debt, amounting to JD102 million, to pharmaceutical companies and warehouses, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The debt was borne by GPD partners who contributed to its tenders. Despite the current conditions caused by the spread of the coronavirus, the department prioritised clearing the debt to attend to the needs of the health sector.

In a statement carried by Petra, GPD Chairman Hazem Khasawneh on Sunday said that repayments came in accordance with an analytical study pertaining to the size of the debt, its seniority and maturity date.

These payments would provide liquidity for pharmaceutical companies and warehouses which, in turn, would stimulate the national economy and support domestic pharmaceutical supply.

The Ministry of Health and Prince Hamzah Hospital had a combined share of JD83 million of the total debt that was valued at JD102 million, Petra reported.
