AMMAN – The government is considering a move to keep summertime throughout the year, an official source told The Jordan Times Monday.
If the decision gets approved, clocks will not be set back by one hour in October as usual, which would keep the Kingdom three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+3), said the official.
Wintertime will be replaced by measures intended to make better use of winter daylight, said the official, who requested to remain unnamed.
Jordan switched to summertime (Daylight Saving Time) on April 1.
The source said morning working hours and school hours may be delayed to ensure that people head to work and students to schools after sunrise.
Energy saving at wintertime did not prove as feasible as was intended, said the official, who added that neighbouring Arab countries keep summertime during winter “to serve economic and trade purposes”.
On October 24, 2012, the government of former prime minister Abdullah Ensour decided to keep Daylight Saving Time all year around, triggering a heated debate and rejection by many Jordanians.
Public rejection prompted the government to rescind its decision and go back to wintertime a year later.
