AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Sunday announced that the government plans to amend legislation to expand the application of the death penalty, according to a Prime Ministry statement.
The announcement came after authorities carried out the execution by hanging of six convicts in cases under the jurisdiction of the State Security Court, following the finalisation of their sentences and the completion of all constitutional and legal procedures.
Speaking during a Cabinet session held in Zarqa, Hassan said the implementation of the death penalty sends a clear and firm message to anyone who attempts to target members of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army and security agencies.
The prime minister added that the government will work on amending the law to broaden the scope of the death penalty for major drug traffickers and smugglers operating in coordination with external criminal networks.
Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani said in a statement that Sunday’s executions were carried out under the supervision of the State Security Court Attorney General, in accordance with Article 359 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
