AMMAN — The government has announced a new set of measures to adjust flour and wheat prices for April, aiming to maintain stable prices for Arabic bread despite rising production costs driven largely by higher fuel prices.
According to the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, the price of unified flour has been reduced by JD7.797 per tonne, bringing it to JD167.475, down from JD175.272 in March.
The move is intended to ease financial pressure on bakeries and ensure continued supply to the local market, said a ministry statement, cited by Al Mamlaka.
Wheat prices have also been lowered, with the cost per tonne dropping by JD6.083 to JD136.238, compared with JD142.321 last month.
The ministry said the reduction will help cut overall production costs across the bread supply chain.
The ministry said that the decision aligns with a Cabinet policy to keep Arabic bread prices fixed, adding that production costs are reviewed regularly, with adjustments made to reflect market changes while balancing consumer protection and the sustainability of bakery operations.
Despite a recent increase in global oil prices that has driven up operating costs, the government has opted to absorb part of the impact by adjusting key input prices, particularly flour and wheat, to prevent any rise in bread prices, the ministry said.
It also said that the policy of stabilising bread prices will remain in place, with close monitoring of local and international market developments.
Furher measures will be taken if needed to safeguard food security and ease living costs for citizens.
