Gag order bans coverage of attack on Egyptian national

AMMAN — The Amman prosecutor on Monday issued a gag order banning the publication of any news or information about the attack on Egyptian guest worker Ibrahim Darwish.

The Jordan Media Commission (JMC) circulated the order to all media outlets, stating that the ban is aimed at maintaining confidentiality in the investigation, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The order bans the publication of any news or information regarding the case or the investigation, Petra added.

Last week, Darwish was reportedly involved in a dispute with a Jordanian man in a tourist restaurant in Amman, where the Egyptian national works as a security guard.

The following day, some acquaintances of the Jordanian man waited for the victim as he went to work and allegedly assaulted him.

The victim was hospitalised but has since been discharged.

Security authorities identified the perpetrators, four suspects, who are still at large.

Egyptian media outlets reported that the embassy in Amman was following up on the attack against the guest worker.

According to the reports, the suspects forced Darwish, who was on his way to work, to get into a vehicle by threatening him with a gun, and took him to a farm where they assaulted him.

The suspects left the victim unconscious on a desert road, thinking he was dead, Egyptian media reported, adding that a passerby found Darwish and notified the police.
