Former JPMC chairman receives 18-year prison sentence for corruption

AMMAN — Walid Kurdi, a former chairman and CEO of the Jordan Phosphates Mining Company (JPMC), received an 18-year prison sentence and a fine of JD191 million for misuse of the office, in connection with six of Al Shidiyah mines’ contracts.

An anti-corruption judicial commission at the Amman Court of First Instance on Wednesday said that the fine is proportional to the damage inflicted on the JPMC, which resulted from Kurdi’s misuse of the office and corruption, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The court also sentenced four JPMC directors to three-month prison terms and a fine of JD1,000 each, in connection with charges of performing their duties below the required and expected level. The sentences remain open to appeal before the specialised court.
