AMMAN – Jordan is mobilising all its resources to confront attempts to alter the historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi said on Thursday.
Speaking during the opening session of the 164th ordinary meeting of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, Safadi underscored that His Majesty King Abdullah, the custodian of the holy sites, remains firmly committed to defending their status under the Hashemite custodianship, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
Safadi condemned Israel’s “illegal measures” in the occupied West Bank, accusing the Israeli government of obstructing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the two-state solution.
He also denounced recent statements by “racist extremists” Israeli ministers, who have expressed intentions to impose Israeli sovereignty over occupied Palestinian territory.
Safadi said that such statements must be condemned by all who believe in peace and international law.
Reiterating Jordan’s full support for the Palestinian Authority, Safadi welcomed the reformist vision outlined by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He stressed the significance of the commitments made in Abbas’s letters to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Safadi also highlighted the importance of the Two-State Solution Conference held in July, jointly organised by Saudi Arabia and France, and described the upcoming follow-up meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly as a historic event.
He said the conference would serve as “a voice for Palestinian rights” and a reaffirmation of the Arab world’s strategic commitment to a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace, one that ensures the security of all countries in the region.
