Foreign minister, Iranian counterpart discuss efforts to end regional tensions

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Wednesday met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as part of the Iranian top diplomat's regional tour. 

The meeting focused on addressing bilateral issues and efforts to end tensions in the region, aiming to prevent a potential full-scale regional war that would endanger both regional and international peace and security, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi and Araghchi agreed to establish a systematic dialogue to resolve joint concerns, aiming to boost relations based on mutual respect, non-interference in each country's internal affairs, and cooperation that benefits both nations.

Safadi stressed that ending the Israeli aggression on Gaza and Lebanon, as well as stopping Israel's escalation against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and against Islamic and Christian holy sites, is key to de-escalating tensions and restoring stability in the region.

Jordan will not be a battleground for any party and will not permit any violations of its sovereignty, airspace, or the security of its citizens, he reiterated.

Safadi stressed that the path to a just and lasting peace lies in meeting the Palestinian people's right to freedom and establishing an independent, sovereign state on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the two-state solution.

The two ministers also discussed a number of other regional issues.
