AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday held extensive talks with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot.

The discussions focused on efforts to end the catastrophic escalation in the region and to shield it from repercussions threatening both regional and international security and stability, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The two ministers also agreed on the urgent need to stop the escalation between Israel and Iran and to resume negotiations, stressing that these steps are essential to preventing a wider conflict and its potentially grave consequences.

Safadi underscored the importance of the upcoming talks in Geneva on Friday, involving France, Germany, the US, and Iran, describing them as a critical opportunity for diplomacy to succeed in reaching an agreement on Iran’s nuclear file and preventing further regional escalation.

Safadi and Barrot also emphasised the immediate need to intensify efforts towards achieving a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and ensuring the sufficient and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, calling this a shared priority that demands coordinated international action.

Safadi also warned against allowing the situation in Gaza to be sidelined as attention shifts to defusing tensions between Iran and Israel. He stressed that the people of Gaza continue to endure killing, starvation, and inhumane suffering as a result of Israel’s ongoing aggression and the persistent obstruction of life-saving humanitarian assistance.

The two officials also addressed the serious deterioration in the West Bank, with Safadi warning against Israel’s illegal measures that threaten the viability of the two-state solution and place severe strain on the Palestinian people, their leadership, and their economy.

Safadi also reiterated that protecting the two-state solution from such actions must be a priority for all countries that support it as the only viable path to a just and lasting peace that ensures security and stability for all.

He also reiterated the Arab states’ commitment to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which offers normalised relations with Israel and collective security guarantees within the framework of a comprehensive peace that ends the occupation and establishes an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, living side by side with Israel in peace and security, in accordance with international legitimacy.

The ministers also discussed preparations for the upcoming international conference on the two-state solution, to be co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France. The event was postponed due to Israel’s recent attack on Iran, with a new date to be agreed upon.

Safadi also commended France’s leading role in advancing peace efforts based on the two-state solution, stressing that recognising the State of Palestine is a necessary step towards affirming the inevitability of this solution and generating momentum for its implementation.

Regional developments in Syria were also on the agenda. Safadi welcomed France’s recent initiatives to support Syria and emphasised the importance of supporting its reconstruction in a way that preserves its unity, sovereignty, security, and stability, eliminates terrorism, enables the voluntary return of refugees, and safeguards the rights of all Syrians.

The two ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Lebanon’s security, stability, sovereignty, and institutional capacity.

Safadi and Barrot also highlighted the strength of the Jordanian-French partnership and the continued cooperation between the two countries’ leaderships and governments in providing humanitarian assistance to Gaza, promoting a lasting ceasefire, de-escalating regional tensions, and advancing a political process that leads to a just and comprehensive peace while reinforcing regional security and stability.
