AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Wednesday held a phone call with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments.
The ministers underscored the importance of boosting bilateral ties and expanding cooperation between Jordan and Australia across various sectors, with the aim of advancing the interests of both nations, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
The discussion also focused on regional issues, with Safadi highlighting the urgent need to intensify efforts to stop Israeli aggression on Gaza, achieve a lasting and comprehensive ceasefire, implement a detainee exchange agreement, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, which is currently facing a severe humanitarian crisis exacerbated by ongoing hostilities.
Minister Safadi commended the cooperation between Jordan and Australia in delivering humanitarian and medical assistance to those affected by the Israeli war on the besieged Strip.
He also underscored the imperative of ending the escalation in the occupied West Bank, stopping all illegal Israeli actions that undermine the two-state solution and ceasing attacks on Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, as well as violations of the city’s established legal and historical status.
Reaffirming Jordan’s longstanding position, Safadi reiterated that a just and comprehensive peace can only be achieved through the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living in security and peace alongside Israel in accordance with relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
The ministers also reviewed regional and international efforts aimed at ensuring that the forthcoming international conference in New York, scheduled for this month and co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, yields concrete outcomes that advance the cause of a just and lasting peace, including broader international recognition of the State of Palestine.
They also agreed to maintain ongoing coordination and cooperation on various issues of mutual interest.
