AMMAN — During a Cabinet session chaired by Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh on Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi briefed the Council of Ministers on efforts led by His Majesty to initiate an urgent international movement to halt the  growing escalation in Gaza and its surroundings, while also protecting the region from its ramifications.

Safadi stressed that violence and escalation would only worsen the situation and could have significant repercussions on the region, especially in light of the continued Israeli violations in the Palestinian territories against the Islamic and Christian holy sites and depriving Palestinians of their rights, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Jordan has warned of the impact of this escalation on efforts to deescalate the situation, stressing the need for self-restraint, protection of civilians and respect of international humanitarian law.

He emphasised that continued violence and escalation will have devastating consequences, affecting all.

Safadi also stressed the need to find a real political horizon to achieve peace on the basis of the two-state solution — the only way towards peace — in a way that guarantees the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital on the lines of June 4, 1967, living in peace and security side by side with Israel.

Safadi stressed the need to halt all Israeli measures that cement occupation and undermine the opportunities for realising comprehensive peace.

Safadi said that there is continuous coordination with the Arab countries and efforts are underway to hold an Arab League foreign ministers meeting in the coming days to discuss strategies for joint Arab action to stop this dangerous escalation.

Jordan is continuing its efforts and working with the “brotherly” Arab countries and international partners to put an end to the escalation, protect the whole region of its ramifications, and open a real political horizon to halt all measures that perpetuate occupation and intensify violence.
