AMMAN — The government is making headway with the National Water Carrier project, Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Al Najjar said on Wednesday.

Highlighting the results of the coordination meeting with 11 international financial institutions that was held on Tuesday at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Najjar said that the project is “making noticeable progress”, notably technical measures and preparations for tender.

He expected all final documents to be available for qualified parties next month.

The parties will submit requests in August, he said, noting that the best offer will be selected by the end of the year, according to a Water Ministry statement.

The coordination meeting was “fruitful”, as the institutions expressed readiness to support Jordan in implementing the Aqaba-Amman desalination and water transport project that would provide some 300 million cubic metres of desalinated water a year, he said.

Arab, Japanese, Korean, German, French, American and other donor and financial institutions attended the meeting, including the Islamic Investment Bank, the European Investment Bank, the German Development Bank (KfW), the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the European Bank for Development and Reconstruction, the French Development Agency, the International Finance Corporation, the German Bank for International Cooperation, among others, he said.
