AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Monday charged a 49-year-old man with the premeditated murder of his daughter in Marka District headquarters earlier in the day for reasons related to family honour, official sources said.

Public Security Department Spokesperson Maj. Amer Sartawi told The Jordan Times that the 22-year-old victim went missing from her home “and it seems that it is a so-called honour murder”.

Police immediately apprehended the suspect and seized the gun that he allegedly used in the shooting incident, a senior official source said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival, the source added.

According to a senior judicial source, the victim went missing from her family home almost a year-and-a-half ago.

“The victim was found on Monday and her father was summoned to sign a guarantee that he would not harm her and take her home,” said the judicial source, who is close to the investigation.

The suspect reportedly took a gun and headed to Marka District headquarters, where he “went in through a side door”.

“The minute he saw his daughter he fired five shots at her head,” the judicial source told The Jordan Times.

The suspect “did not show any remorse for what he did”, he noted.

Criminal Court Prosecutor Ramzi Nawayseh also charged the suspect with possessing an unlicensed gun and issued orders for his detention at a correctional and rehabilitation centre for 15 days pending further investigation into the incident.
