AMMAN — The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in Jordan has launched a specialised training programme, in cooperation with Advanced Haloes for Project Management, on climate change adaptation targeting 200 women from local communities in the governorates of Madaba, Karak, Tafileh and Ma’an. The programme is implemented under the project Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan through Improving Water Use Efficiency in the Agriculture Sector (BRCCJ).
The programme aims to prepare participants to become part of a cadre of Women Leaders in Climate Change Adaptation. A total of 50 women from each governorate have been selected to participate in the training, which will run for two months and include 30 specialised training sessions, according to a FAO statement.
The training programme is being delivered under the supervision of eight women leaders who received advanced training last year through project activities, contributing to strengthening women’s role in disseminating knowledge and awareness on climate change adaptation at the community level.
This activity is part of the Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan through Improving Water Use Efficiency in the Agriculture Sector (BRCCJ) project, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented by FAO in Jordan in collaboration with the Ministries of Water and Irrigation, Agriculture, and Environment, and in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The participants expressed their pride in joining the training programme and emphasised their commitment to benefiting from the knowledge and skills provided. They highlighted their aspiration to play an active role in raising community awareness of climate change issues and adaptation measures, while transferring the knowledge gained to their local communities.
The project, valued at $33.25 million, targets four governorates within the Dead Sea Basin, Karak, Madaba, Tafileh and Ma’an, which are among the areas most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and climate-induced water stress.
The project places particular emphasis on women’s empowerment and on strengthening their role as key partners in climate change adaptation efforts by improving their access to information and resources needed to address climate challenges, protect livelihoods, and enhance the social and economic well-being of families and local communities.
