AMMAN — Secretary General of the Ministry of Political and Parliamentary Affairs Ali Khawaldeh on Wednesday attended the closing ceremony of the “Our decision: Supporting civil society for democratic governance” project that was supported by the EU and Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).

The project aims to promote the role of civil society to contribute to democratic governance and policy making, as well as enhance the role of civil society institutions in public life and decision making, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Khawaldeh said that activating laws needs a collective national effort, where the outcomes of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System are aimed at enhancing the presence of political parties in parliamentary life.

He added that engaging citizens in decision making at the local and national levels constitutes the essence of democracy, which is a main mission of civil society institutions and political parties.

Spain's Ambassador to Jordan Aranzazu Banon Davalos said that the project’s partners worked together with their respective local communities to enhance democratic life and human rights for all citizens.

EU Ambassador to Jordan Maria Hadjitheodosiou stressed that the work completed over the past four years to support the participation of the civil community in democratic governance has realised important results, such as forming alliances that were directly engaged as observers for elections.
