AMMAN — Director of the College of Europe and head of the EU’s Diplomatic Academy Federica Mogherini visited Petra on Saturday, where she toured key landmarks and was briefed on ongoing efforts to safeguard the ancient city’s cultural heritage.
Mogherini, who previously served as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, highlighted the importance of international cooperation in preserving heritage sites of global value. She also commended Jordan’s role in protecting World Heritage sites across the Kingdom.
Her tour included visits to Beidha, the Monastery, Qasr Al-Bint, the Court, the Treasury, the Siq, and other prominent archaeological landmarks within the Petra Archaeological Park.
During the visit, Chief Commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) Fares Braizat reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to clear strategies aimed at safeguarding the site and ensuring its long-term sustainability. He noted that PDTRA operates in line with the criteria of the World Heritage Centre, under which Petra was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, according to a PDTRA statement.
Braizat also pointed to the government’s efforts, in coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and international partners, to adopt a systematic approach that enhances Jordan’s standing in global travel reports, a step he said would further support the tourism sector’s recovery.
