EU brings solar energy to schools in Jordan Valley

AMMAN — European Commission Director Michael Köhler and EU Ambassador to Jordan Andrea Fontana visited Al Rawdah Primary Coeducational School last week in the Jordan Valley, according to an EU statement released Sunday.

The EU support to Al Rwadah school financed a 10.5 kilowatt capacity solar system and the replacement of conventional light lamps with energy-saving bulbs. Through the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme in Jordan and as part of the initiative led by the Princess Alia Foundation, the EU is funding a project of nearly 400,000 euros to install photovoltaic panels in all schools located in poverty pockets within the Jordan Valley.

Sharifa Surra Bint Ghazi, CEO of the Princess Alia Foundation accompanied the EU representatives on a tour of the school’s newly installed photovoltaic panel system. Köhler stressed that the EU is always ready to support new ideas to further encourage smarter energy production and consumption.
