AMMAN — An MP from the Northern Badia region allegedly abused her privileges when dealing with security agencies on Friday, facilitating the escape of a suspect from police custody, a security source said Monday.
MP Miasar Sardiyeh used her status as deputy to be allowed to speak to her uncle who was in custody at the Sabha and Subhieh police station for suspected involvement in a group fight in the Mafraq village where firearms were used, the source said on condition of anonymity.
But Sardiyeh helped the suspect escape custody, using her car to speed away from the police station and hitting a police officer who attempted to stop her vehicle, the source told The Jordan Times.
The officer sustained minor injuries.
Sardiyeh could not be reached for comment on the incident.
The deputy is expected to face legal action, as she does not enjoy immunity at present because the Lower House is not in session.
Police are currently investigating the incident to build a "solid legal case" against her, the source said, adding that Sardiyeh could face suspension from the Lower House ahead of standing trial.
Last year, deputies voted to expel MP Talal Sharif from the House for bringing an automatic weapon to Parliament and shooting at a colleague.
