AMMAN — Jordan and Israel on Thursday signed a declaration of intent to rehabilitate and improve the environment and water system of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea.
The declaration of intent, signed on the sidelines of the UN COP27 Climate Change Conference hosted by Egypt in Sharm El Sheikh, was inked by Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Al Najjar and Israeli Minister of Environmental Protection Tamar Zandberg, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The declaration of intent aims to rehabilitate the Jordan River, whose flow rate has dropped by 7 per cent, which led to an annual decrease of three feet in the Dead Sea level.
Jordan has worked hard to mobilise international community’s support to save the Dead Sea, which is regarded as common heritage for humanity, Petra reported.
The declaration of intent falls within the Kingdom's efforts to mobilise the international community's support to address the climate challenges, rehabilitate the environment and sustainable development of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea, and create jobs which would improve quality of life in the region and provide more water to the residents of both banks of the Jordan River, including the Palestinian people, Petra reported.
