Cybercrimes draft law decision in hands of Lower House — gov’t

AMMAN — The government referred the 2018 cybercrime draft law and its necessitating reasons to the Lower House on May 28, according to official letters issued by the Prime Ministry. The letters highlight that the draft law is now the responsibility of the Lower Chamber under its constitutional authorities, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

In its session on May 21, the Cabinet endorsed the bill and the necessitating reasons, which aim at limiting cybercrimes to curb hate speech, privacy violation and other crimes, especially those committed on social media platforms. Earlier in the month, thousands of citizens rallied in front of the professional associations compound to protest against the income tax, cybercrimes and civil service draft laws, arguing that the cybercrime bill would restrict the public freedom.
