Customs agents foil attempt to smuggle cigarettes

AMMAN — Jordan Customs Department (JCD) personnel in Aqaba have foiled an attempt to smuggle 922 cartons of cigarettes in a container, the JCD said in a statement released this week.

The container’s owner had stated that it contained used clothes, according to a JCD statement, which added that agents seized the contraband after receiving a tip-off about the container’s contents. Total customs fines in the case reached JD1.85 million, the JCD said.
