AMMAN — In an effort to confront the general tendency of overconsumption during the holy month of Ramadan, the National Society of Consumer Protection (NSCP) on Thursday urged homemakers to ration their cooking and to make only one main dish for iftar.
The NSCP recommended the preparation of dishes that are rich in greens and the eschewing of unhealthy fast food meals, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.
The society warned of the health hazards of drinking juices that are often sold by street vendors during Ramadan.
Possible unsanitary conditions under which these drinks are prepared can make the beverages harmful, the society said, suggesting that they be made at home.
NSCP President Mohammad Obeidat urged homemakers to prepare homemade desserts, as opposed to those typically purchased from stores.
Homemade varieties are healthier and contribute to mitigating costs during the holy month, he underlined.
Obeidat added that doing so would make dessert shops lower their prices.
Homemakers should teach their children to be productive, by avoiding the purchase of meals that can be made at home and urge them to think of ways to produce rather than consume, he concluded.
