Conservation society marks Earth Hour

AMMAN — The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) marked Earth Hour on Saturday for the eighth consecutive year to raise awareness on the impact of climate change and excessive energy consumption.

The RSCN organised a series of lectures, environmental games and ended the celebration of the event with a candle-lit march down Rainbow Street in Jabal Amman, according to an RSCN statement e-mailed to The Jordan Times.

The RSCN also turned off its lights at Wild Jordan and all of its nature reserves to mark Earth Hour.

RSCN Director General Yehya Khaled said during the event that addressing climate change requires the cooperation and coordination of all.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour.

The event has grown globally, with more than 50 million people switching off their lights for an hour every year.
