Christians in Jordan mark Palm Sunday

AMMAN — Christians in Jordan celebrated Palm Sunday, which falls on the Sunday before Easter and commemorates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, where the city’s residents received him with palm and olive branches, according to Christian beliefs.

This year’s celebration of Easter, which falls on April 19 according to the Julian calendar, ismarked amid a nationwide curfew imposed by Jordan and several countries around the world to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa said that these religious occasions are marked without the gathering of people, adding that the spread of the pandemic has “deprived us of our security, celebrations and coming together”.

Patriarch of the Holy City and all Jordan and Palestine Archbishop Christoforos Atallah reiterated “full commitment” to the government’s curfew orders, calling upon the faithful to “transform their homes into small churches and continue praying and fasting”.
