AMMAN — The Court of Cassation upheld a May 2022 Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to seven years in prison after convicting him of sexually assaulting his relative in November 2021.
The court declared the defendant guilty of molesting a 14-year-old girl on November 7 and handed him the maximum punishment.
Court papers said the victim was alone in her house when the defendant decided to pay her a visit to sexually assault her”.
“The minute the victim opened the door, the defendant attacked her and assaulted her on two different occasions in the same hour and left,” the court added.
The victim informed her family about the assault and they filed a complaint against him, court papers added.
The court said in its ruling that it relied in its conviction on DNA evidence taken from the victim, which matched the defendant.
The defendant did not contest his verdict at a higher court.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the sentence.
The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.
“The defendant confessed to the sexual assault incident when he was arrested and the DNA evidence supports the prosecution’s case,” the higher court ruled.
Therefore, he deserves the punishment he received, the higher court added.
The Court of Cassation was headed by Judge Yassin Abdullat and included judges Nayef Samarat, Hammad Ghzawi, Mohammad Khashashneh and Qassem Dughmi.
