Building permits rise 5.4% in first five months of 2026 - DoS

AMMAN — The number of building permits issued across the Kingdom during the first five months of 2026 reached 10,104, compared with 9,585 during the same period last year, marking a 5.4 per cent increase, according to the Department of Statistics (DoS).

The total licensed building area stood at 3.985 million square metres (sqm) during the January-May period, compared with 3.983 million sqm in the corresponding period of 2025, representing a slight increase of 0.1 per cent, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Residential construction accounted for the majority of licensed areas, reaching 3.373 million sqm, compared with 2.981 million sqm during the same period last year, an increase of 13 per cent.

Meanwhile, licensed areas for non-residential purposes totalled 612,000 sqm, down from 1.002 million sqm in the first five months of 2025, marking a 39 per cent decline. Residential buildings accounted for 85 per cent of total licensed areas, while non-residential buildings represented 15 per cent.

The Central Region accounted for 72 per cent of the total licensed building area during the first five months of 2026, followed by the Northern Region with 22 per cent and the Southern Region with 6 per cent.

By governorate, the Capital Governorate recorded the highest share of licensed residential areas relative to population, accounting for 15.3 per cent, with 0.407 sqm per capita.

Zarqa Governorate recorded the lowest share, at 2.6 per cent, with 0.069 sqm per capita.

New buildings and extensions to existing structures accounted for 56.3 per cent of the total licensed building area during the first five months of 2026, while existing buildings accounted for 43.7 per cent.

The licensed area for new buildings and extensions stood at 2.242 million sqm, compared with 2.606 million sqm during the same period in 2025, representing a 14 per cent decrease.
