Awareness campaign launched to deter swimming in King Abdullah Canal

AMMAN — The Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ), with support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and in partnership with Blumont, has launched an awareness campaign on the dangers of swimming in the King Abdullah Canal, dams and agricultural ponds, and to limit tampering with water resources.

The event included a foot race that saw the participation of 100 students between the seventh and tenth grades from schools in the Northern Shouneh area to raise awareness against drowning, according to a WAJ statement.

Citing Civil Defence Department figures, the statement said that 68 deaths and 34 injuries have occurred in the King Abdullah Canal, dams and agricultural ponds over the past five years.

WAJ Secretary-General Manar Mahasneh stressed that the King Abdullah Canal is not designed for swimming, but rather transferring irrigation water for farms in the Jordan Valley.

Mahashneh also expressed her gratitude to GIZ and Blumont for their support to ensure the campaign’s success.
