AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday delivered a “powerful” address at the European Parliament, warning that escalating regional conflicts and global moral complacency pose a serious threat to international stability. He urged the global community to uphold international law and shared human values.
In a speech widely praised for its depth and urgency, the King highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank, calling attention to what he described as collective punishment, including home demolitions, starvation, and displacement.
Speaking to Al Mamlaka TV, Chairman of the Board of Al Rai and former Minister of Media Affairs Samih Maaytah said the King’s remarks carried a “multidimensional message,” touching not only on the current crisis but also on enduring civilization and moral principles.
“The Palestinian cause, as the King reiterated, is a core Jordanian belief, deeply rooted in politics, identity, and our commitment to justice and solidarity with our Palestinian brothers,” Maaytah said.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola welcomed King Abdullah, saying: “It is an honour to once again welcome His Majesty to the European Parliament. Each time he addresses this chamber, his words leave a lasting impression.”
Political science professor and Al Rai columnist Abdulhakim Qaralleh described the address as “timely and powerful,” offering a candid assessment of the Middle East’s deteriorating security landscape.
“The King drew attention to the growing disregard for humanitarian values, as force and violence increasingly dominate global affairs,” Qaralleh said. “He called on all parties to uphold their legal, moral, and humanitarian responsibilities in order to end ongoing wars and crises.”
Qaralleh noted that the King painted a comprehensive picture of the region's complexities, particularly amid the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
“He warned of the broader consequences this conflict could have on both regional peace and international stability,” Qaralleh said. “The King emphasized the urgent need for collective international action and a unified return to dialogue and diplomacy.”
At the heart of the King's message, Qaralleh added, was the Palestinian issue. His Majesty reaffirmed its centrality to regional peace and underscored the legitimacy of the Palestinian people’s right to statehood.
“The King urged the international community to recognize Palestinian rights and to support the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state,” Qaralleh said. “He reiterated that the two-state solution remains the only viable path forward.”
Members of the European Parliament responded warmly to the King’s address, viewing it as a “clear roadmap” to resolving regional challenges.
“King Abdullah’s speech reflects the deep respect and trust he commands among European leaders,” Qaralleh said. “It showcased Jordan as a model of moderation and its enduring commitment to international law, peace, and stability.”
