Army thwarts infiltration attempt by ‘Arab’ nationals

AMMAN — Border guards on Thursday foiled an attempt by Arab nationals to cross Jordan into a neighbouring country, a source from the Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) said Sunday.
He said that the incident took place at 10:30am, adding that the suspects wanted to join and fight with a terrorist organisation.
He did not identify whether the destination was Iraq or Syria, where terror groups are active.
They were referred to the relevant authorities, the JAF source was quoted by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, as saying.
The source also stopped short of divulging the number of the suspects or their nationalities.
The army has various measures in place to safeguard border security and foil attempts of infiltration and smuggling which could endanger national security, JAF has said in previous statements.
The crises in Syria and Iraq have placed more pressure on Jordan’s army to safeguard the long borders it shares with these turmoil-hit countries.
Experts say that the “highly professional” JAF and security agencies are capable of protecting the Kingdom’s borders with the said neighbours.
JAF has thwarted many infiltration attempts from and into these unstable countries and engaged groups in the process.
