AMMAN — The Arab Parliament on Thursday reiterated its support for the Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites.

Arab Parliament Speaker Adel Assoumi, in a statement, lauded His Majesty King Abdullah's efforts towards defending and safeguarding the holy shrines, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The statement also emphasised the parliament’s rejection of all occupation forces’ attempts to undermine the Hashemite Custodianship, noting that on March 13, 2013, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah signed an agreement reaffirming the Hashemite Custodianship.

Assoumi voiced appreciation for the Jordanian role in caring for the reconstruction and restoration of the holy city to maintain its Arab, Islamic and historical identity.

He expressed support for the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf Administration for its role in protecting Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif against the occupation’s violations, regarding it as the sole competent authority to manage the affairs of Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif.

He also called on the international community to respect all international agreements related to the Hashemite Custodianship.
