Apparel, footwear imports witness increase — sector representative

AMMAN — Eid shopping accounts for 20 per cent of consumer expenditures on apparels and footwear in the Kingdom, according to the Textile, Readymade Clothes and Footwear Syndicate.

In a statement made available to The Jordan Times, President of the Textile, Readymade Clothes and Footwear Syndicate Sultan Allan said that the value of imported apparels during the first quarter of 2022 reached JD57 million. 

He noted that apparel and footwear imports this year grew by 28 and 47 per cent, respectively, when compared with the same period of 2021.

“The prices of clothes and footwear in the local market remain stable, despite the rise in freight rates and operating costs,” Allan stated.

Former president of Jordan’s Textile and Readymade Clothes Syndicate Muneer Deyeh told The Jordan Times, that in-store sales surged during eid and Ramadan, however, consumer spending has remained less when compared with pre-pandemic period.

“Eid spending has improved sector operators’ performance, but it did not reach pre-COVID levels,” Deyeh added.

Mahmoud Abu Laila, owner of an apparel store in Amman, told The Jordan Times that “during this eid, total sales have increased by 20-25 per cent.”

Abu Laila noted that sales in his shop still did not exceed pre-pandemic levels.

The Kingdom’s apparel and footwear industry is composed of 11,800 facilities. Directly employs 63,000 individuals and consists of 180 brands which invest in the local market.
