AMMAN — The Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) on Monday foiled an alleged attempt to smuggle more than one million illicit pills destined for a neighbouring country a day earlier, according to police.
Ten suspects were arrested during the sting operation, which lasted two months, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
“The law-enforcement agency received a tip that a group of suspects were planning to smuggle 1.2 million illicit pills to a neighbouring country by lacing the illegal pills in secret compartments of heavy machinery,” Sartawi said.
Several teams were formed and tasked with monitoring the group’s movements, he added.
“One of the suspects bought a compactor and parked it in a storage space in Rusiefeh,” according to Sartawi.
The suspects allegedly started transferring quantities of the illegal narcotics into the warehouse in stages, he added.
“Five law-enforcement agencies teams stormed the warehouse and other areas where the suspects were staying simultaneously,” according to Sartawi.
The compactor was transported to the AND headquarters, he said.
Upon searching the compactor, he added, “officers found 1.2 million pills hidden in secret compartments”.
Investigations are ongoing in the case and all suspects will be referred to the State Security Court prosecution office for further questioning and indictment, according to a statement by the Public Security Directorate.
