AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) plans to construct eight pedestrian bridges in the capital this year in the interest of public safety, a GAM official said on Wednesday.
Amjad Attar, director of GAM’s construction department, said the municipality will build cement and metal overpasses at a cost of JD400,000.
“We always construct the bridges in areas frequented by a great number of pedestrians or where schools and event halls are located,” he told The Jordan Times over the phone.
Attar noted that the targeted areas were selected by a committee that included representatives from the Traffic Department and GAM’s central, traffic, transport and construction departments.
“They will be constructed in several areas including Ras Al Ain and Sweileh,” he added.
Attar also said the municipality will rehabilitate four bridges at a total cost of JD120,000.
Attar said GAM will build fences beneath the new bridges to prevent pedestrians from crossing the street by jaywalking.
“We hope that people will be aware that it is dangerous to cross the street when there are bridges built for their safety,” he added.
