AMMAN — Secretary General of the Judicial Council on Sunday announced that the amendments to the Jordanian Penal Code No.16 of 1960 came into effect as of June 24, 2022, 30 days after the amendment’s publication in the Official Gazette, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
According to the amendments, first-time offenders who received jail sentences of less than a year may submit a mitigating plea to receive sentences alternative to imprisonment, including community service, probation and the restriction of movement.
According to the amended code, a convict would undertake a minimum of 40 and a maximum of 100 working hours in a year to complete the community service requirements. Convicts will also be electronically monitored for a minimum of one month and a maximum of one year and will be obligated to participate in a rehabilitation programme intended to assess and improve their behaviour. To restrict convicts’ movement, they will be prohibited from entering certain locations for a minimum of one month and a maximum of one year, the amendment stipulates.
