AMMAN — The Ministry of Agriculture on Sunday began purchasing wheat and barley from farmers, also opening receiving centres and silos.
The Cabinet recently issued its approval for the government to begin purchasing wheat and barley from farmers for the 2022-2023 agricultural season.
The decision comes as a continuation of the government's policy of supporting farmers and encouraging them to increase the geographic area of wheat and barley cultivation because of the strategic importance of the crops, according to a statement from the ministry.
The Cabinet decision set the price of wheat and barley at JD500 per tonne for seed wheat, JD420 for port wheat, JD420 per tonne of seed barley and JD370 per tonne for port barley.
Jordan imports about 95 per cent of its wheat and barley from international markets, as domestic production does not exceed 5 per cent of the country’s needs.
According to the Trade Ministry, Jordan consumes 80,000 tonnes of wheat and 60,000 tonnes of barley each month.
Jordan is working on increasing the grain storage capacity by building storage facilities in several areas.
According to the ministry, several facilities will be constructed this year in different parts of the country, such as a facility with a 500,000-tonne capacity in Qatraneh, another in Al Muwaqar with a 100,000-tonne capacity and a facility in Al Ghabawi with a 100,000-tonne capacity.
