Activists call on gov’t not to proceed with Israeli gas deal

AMMAN — The Jordan BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel) movement has expressed “deep concern and opposition to the finalisation of a recent gas deal between Jordan and Israel”, which “comes in the aftermath of Israel’s morally reprehensible attack on Gaza”.
In a statement sent to The Jordan Times on Saturday, the movement said “the gas-purchase agreement is not in Jordan’s long-term strategic interest,” as it would make the Kingdom dependent on Israel for its energy needs.
Jordan BDS, which was established by a group of activists in the wake of the Israeli attack on Gaza, called on the government “not to proceed further and approve the natural gas agreement with Israel” and instead diversify by seeking energy from multiple sources, and invest in projects aimed at utilising Jordan’s own natural resources.
