52 million dunums could be turned as arable land — Kharabsheh

AMMAN — Up to 52 million dunums in the Kingdom could be utilised for agriculture, provided that irrigation water is secured and land is rehabilitated, Environment Minister and Acting Minister of Agriculture Saleh Kharabsheh said on Tuesday.
Citing ministry studies, Kharabsheh said that the total area of land that annually receives more than 200 millimetres of rainwater is estimated at nine million dunums, which equals 10 per cent of the Kingdom's area, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The minister also said that mountainous areas that annually receive more than 200 millimetres of rainwater total 450,000 dunums, while natural forest area constitutes 400,000 dunums and planted forests amount for 506,000 dunums.
