MAFRAQ — More than 50,000 children currently reside at the Zaatari Refugee Camp, which is home to more than 113,000 Syrians, according to Kilian Kleinschmidt, who runs the camp for the UN Refugee Agency.
In an interview with the Jordan News Agency, Petra, he noted that children in the camp are used for smuggling operations, a phenomenon the UNCHR tracked during its field work, adding that some 1,000 children were found to be involved in smuggling, while others worked for low wages outside the facility.
Kleinschmidt said the agency was cooperating with the concerned organisations to raise the awareness of children and their families on the importance of education and enrolling in camp schools, which currently accommodate around 11,000 students.
