46-truck convoy entered Gaza, first direct aid from Jordan since October 7

AMMAN — Minister of Government Communications Muhannad Mubaidin, who is also the government spokesperson,  said on Wednesday that a convey of  46-truck, organised by the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), transported over 750 metric tonnes of life-saving food to Gaza. The convoy entered  Gaza through the Karam Abu Salem crossing via the King Hussein Bridge, representing the first time a direct aid convoy from Jordan reaching the strip since the escalation in hostilities that  began on October 7. 

This step, after weeks of coordination, could pave the way for a more sustainable aid corridor through Jordan. That has not been possible before, referencing the one route available through Egypt, WFP said on its website.

"Establishing a corridor through Jordan will increase the flow of aid and remove some of the pressure and congestion we are currently facing. This will allow us to secure more supplies and have more trucks on the road," said Samer AbdelJaber, the WFP Palestine Representative, Country Director, and Emergency Coordinator. "We are very grateful to everyone who made this possible. This is a promising step that will hopefully grant us more sustained and scaled-up access to reach more people in Gaza, faster,” he added on the website.

WFP has been mobilising food across all surrounding areas in the region in line with its commitment to provide life-saving food assistance to people in Gaza. WFP stated that delivering food from Jordan will increase the volume and speed of food reaching the Gaza Strip, as millions face the risk of starvation. 

This collaboration came following the recent Aqaba Process Meeting, hosted by His Majesty King Abdullah, which called for the opening of additional border crossings and the use of the Kingdom as a base for aid entry into Gaza, the website added.

JHCO Secretary-General Hussein Shibli said that the convoy was laden with basic food items with long expiry dates to be distributed to relevant agencies in Gaza, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He added that this cooperation between JHCO and WFP seeks to increase aid delivery to Gaza with more amounts, and noted that the organisation has so far dispatched 22 aircrafts and 76 trucks of medical, food and relief items to Gaza.
