ZARQA — Thirty five beggars have been detained in Zarqa during field inspections conducted during Ramadan so far, Zarqa social development director Jiryes Ammari said Sunday.
Among the beggars were 12 juveniles and four Syrian refugees, Ammari said, adding that the number of vagrants on the streets rises when it is nearly dusk and after iftar, the meal to break the day-long fast.
He said beggars take advantage of people’s emotions and they work in organised groups.
Adult beggars detained by authorities were referred to the administrative governor, while juveniles were referred to a care centre in Madaba Governorate.
Meanwhile, Ammari said the directorate, in cooperation with the Social Development Ministry, distributes financial and humanitarian assistance to underprivileged families and orphans.
He said Zarqa has 300 charity societies, half of which are inactive.
