‘30 suspected graft cases under investigation following arrests’

AMMAN — Specialist investigation committees at the Jordan Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission (JIACC) have begun looking into suspected graft cases recently referred to the agency by the government, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Monday.

The government has referred 30 cases of suspected corruption to JIACC, including cases related to counterfeiting work permits, issued by several labour directorates.

An unnamed source at JIACC told Petra that the commission has prioritised these cases due to their negative impact on the national economy and the damage they may cause to national integrity standards.

JIACC will coordinate with the integrity and anti-corruption prosecutor general to pursue anyone suspected to be involved in corruption cases, the source added, with further referral to court when necessary.

The source noted that the prosecutor also decided to order the detention of an employee at the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organisation, for allegedly asking for a bribe to do his job.

Four employees at Mafraq’s Labour Department were detained on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in corruption.

Meanwhile, the Amman Court of Appeal endorsed a two-year prison sentence issued by the Amman Criminal Court against a person found guilty of involvement in counterfeiting results of the 2013 examination of the Jordan Medical Board.
