AMMAN (JT) — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) has dealt with 241 out of 335 abandoned buildings in the capital classified by inspectors as becoming a public health hazard, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Sunday.
GAM Executive Director of Districts Emad Dmour said that the municipality has cleaned up 187 deserted houses, closed 54, and demolished two houses in an imminent state of collapse while continuing their efforts on buildings with similar issues.
Since the start of this year, GAM teams have been working on locating derelict buildings and taking the necessary measures to address them, including demolishing the houses expected to collapse and charging their owners.
The municipality requested owners of abandoned buildings to monitor their properties to prevent them from becoming a public health hazard and a haven for “inappropriate behaviours”, stressing that the municipality will take actions according to the law and in coordination with relevant authorities.
