2023-2040 National Water Strategy to address Jordan’s key water security challenges

AMMAN — The Ministry of Water and Irrigation has announced that the recently approved 2023-2040 National Water Strategy reflects the government's plan and objectives in the water sector, according to the ministry statement.

The strategy aligns with His Majesty King Abdullah’s vision to establish a long-term plan to effectively address challenges such as water scarcity, population growth, climate change and the need for optimal water resource management.

The comprehensive strategy focuses on key objectives such as reducing water loss by 2 per cent annually, with the ultimate goal of reaching a 25 per cent loss reduction by 2040. Additionally, it aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce associated costs, promote the utilisation of alternative energy sources and optimise the operation and maintenance of water resources for the specified period.

To support these objectives, the strategy spotlights the exploration of non-conventional water supply sources and the implementation of essential projects such as the National Water Carrier Project. Furthermore, the strategy aims to improve drinking water supply efficiency, expand wastewater treatment for irrigation purposes and meet the water requirements of industrial, agricultural and tourism sectors.

The Cabinet on Sunday approved the strategy, which was introduced in March and was further examined by the Economic Development Committee and the Infrastructure and Social Development Committee. The committees studied and approved the strategy, reaching a consensus between the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Ministry of Planning.
