20 year jail for term man who killed one, injured two

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a November Criminal Court ruling sentencing a man to 20 years in prison after convicting him of killing a man and injuring two of his relatives over an old feud in  Karak Governorate in March 2015.

The court declared the defendant guilty of fatally shooting the victim and injuring two of his relatives on March 3 and handed him the maximum punishment.

The court also ordered the defendant to pay JD49,650 in compensation to the victim’s family.

Court papers said the defendant had an old feud with the victim which “was never resolved”.

On the day of the incident, the defendant was with his brothers when they saw the victim and two of his relatives walking in their direction.

“The arguments about the old feud became heated, and the defendant pulled his rifle and fired at the three men, killing one and injuring two others,” court papers said.

The defendant contested the Criminal Court’s ruling charging that there were inconsistencies during the trial and that the “court relied on certain witnesses and disregarded others”.

However, the higher court ruled that the Criminal Court followed the proper procedures when sentencing and the defendant deserves the verdict he received. 

The Court of Cassation judges were Mohammad Ibrahim, Naji Zubi, Yassin Abdullat, Bassim Mubeidin and Majid Azab.
